What is SnapChat? And how can you use it for your company?

There is a myth that Snapchat is only for individuals (especially the youth), not companies.  Well, that's not true.

Today we will show you exactly how you can build your brand and attract followers on Snapchat - how to attract new visitors, converse them to customers, and eventually bosst sales for your business!  Let's start from the basics.

What is Snapchat?

In short, Snapchat is a social media platform launched in 2011 to share photos and videos automatically self-destruct in a matter of seconds of an open receiver.  It is very easy to use, and it is considered a young person's platform that celebrities adore. It is also considered one of the best apps to send and receive photos. Even though the majority of its users are younger generation it has great potential to grow even more cause after all it is one of the largest social media channel nowadays.

Of course, you can  chat and send a message to people on Snapchat, just like Facebook massager or WhatsApp.  As early as 2013, CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg tried to buy Snapchat with 3 billion dollars but got denied (The Wall Street Journal).  At the end, Facebook launched a similar service, an application called Facebook Slingshot which was a clone of Snapchat.

What? You never heard of Facebook Slingshot? Well, no one else does. Sorry Facebook, but Snapchat still rules in this space.

Why do people like Snapchat? Other than the fun nature, it is also extremely personal. You can share your photos with anyone without worrying that the pictures will be saved and uploaded on the Internet for public viewing. The fact that all the photos and videos are self-destructive in a matter of seconds, there is simply no possibility for recipients to do any follow-up about them.

How do I start using Snapchat?

Very easy. Just like all any other social media apps: download the application from a mobile platform which is available on Android, GooglePlay, IOS, or Windows.

Open the application, complete your personal info, verify your identity and add your contacts. You will be guided through the step-by-step process, and it only takes a few minutes. Select your personal preferences and then you're pretty much ready to go.  At the beginning, Snapchat will ask you to import your contact list instead of adding "strangers" like Facebook or other social media channels, this is a must-stage if you want to group your followers.

  • You can add a slogan/tagline/short title to your photos with beautiful selection of filters. Then you can send your photos out to your friends!

  • You also have the opportunity to add a story. The story can be a video or a series of photos allowing followers to know what you've done, and anything else you want to share. A story lasts only 24 hours.

  • You can also start a chat session with your followers. It works like any other Messenger chat, with one exception: you won't be able to read the chat as soon as you close the window because it will disappear!

The Myth of Snapchat

The most common myth about Snapchat that it was NOT created for business, nor the application allows any sorts of marketing. And we can confirm that this is NOT true!

Here is the trick of companies can grow followers on Snapchat: since you have to share your contacts in order to start adding followers and get popular. We suggest you create a Facebook or other social media pages and add up enough followers, so that you can add those contact onto Snapchat as well.

If you look at the features of Snapchat narration, you will see that it is very effective in promoting campaigns, products and so on. And because it is done in images or a video (with or without subtitles), they are much easier and faster for people to consume.

Another myth is that it takes a lot of time to build awareness on Snapchat. Well, a lot of it depends on how attractive your campaigns  are and the initial number of followers that you can take to the platform.  In fact, all social media marketing takes time to build up and maintain - that is why there are many agencies out there like eDesign101 to save your time by  do the marketing for you with a monthly charge.

After adding followers you already have from Facebook, Twitter, email, a website etc., you can start with photo and content sharing in a much more "friendly" way, and guarantee to get good results.

Myth #3 is that Snapchat is eclipsed by another platform. This is kind of like a comparison of apples and oranges because there is actually no other platforms like Snapchat. Facebook and Twitter are mainly based on messages/text while Snapchat is based on images. Facebook and Twitter have attracted the attention of relatively older people while Snapchat appeals to the younger generation who are mostly under 40 years of age.
