About Nokia
Nokia is a Finnish multinational telecommunications, information technology, and consumer electronics company with a rich history of over 150 years. It was originally founded in 1865 by Fredrik Idestam as a pulp mill and has since evolved into one of the most recognizable names in telecommunications.
Key Milestones in Nokia’s History:
1865 (Early Years): Nokia was founded as a pulp mill. It diversified into various industries in the following decades, including rubber and cable manufacturing.
1960s-1980s (Entry into Telecommunications): Nokia began to focus on telecommunications in the 1960s, developing its first mobile phones in the late 1980s. The company launched its first mobile phone, the Nokia Mobira Senator, in 1982, one of the first car phones.
1990s (Mobile Phone Era I): Nokia rose to prominence in the mobile phone market, becoming the world’s largest manufacturer by the late 1990s. Iconic models like the Nokia 3210 and Nokia 3310 became household names, known for their durability and long battery life.
2000s (Mobile Phone Era II): Nokia innovated by introducing smartphones and multimedia devices. The Nokia Nseries, launched in the mid-2000s, showcased advanced features like high-quality cameras and multimedia capabilities.
2010s(Smartphone Competition): Nokia faced intense competition from Apple and Android manufacturers, leading to a decline in market share. In 2011, Nokia partnered with Microsoft to use its smartphones' Windows Phone operating system.
2014(Acquisition by Microsoft): Microsoft acquired Nokia’s Devices and Services division for €5.4 billion, intending to strengthen its position in the mobile market. However, this venture struggled to gain traction, and Microsoft eventually wrote off the acquisition.
2016(Rebranding and Return): Nokia began re-entering the smartphone market through licensing agreements, allowing other manufacturers to produce Nokia-branded smartphones. HMD Global, a Finnish company, was established to handle the production and marketing of Nokia phones.
(Current Focus) Today, Nokia focuses on telecommunications infrastructure, including 5G networks, IoT (Internet of Things) solutions, and software services. The company is a key player in providing global technology and services for network operators.
